New pet - Questions for BlackLungs created in General CSS talk (moan/bitch)

Wonder if you could give me some advice -
We took our neice and nephew to Longleat yesterday and they were able to handle a Leopard gecko.
Sara adores geckos and I thought this little thing was the cutest ever, the handler told me they made good pets.
I had thought about one as a pet before but imagined they would be flighty little things, running around the place but seems not.
Could you give me the benefit of your training and expertise ? Are they smelly ? Can they be allowed out of their vivariums ?
Is the Leopard the most friendly gecko ? The handler did say they can live a long time (12-15years) , do all Geckos live this long ?
